Awhile back, I attended a presentation by a small start-up technology company with a group of fellow investor entrepreneurs and VCs. After being bombarded once again for 45 minutes with "pie in the sky" projections, and the millionth variation of statements like “No one is doing what we’re doing” or “No one can do what we are doing”, it confirmed for me that the rationale and reasoning among many small business entrepreneurs for starting and growing their company - was indeed flawed. The model is broken, which is the reason why 80% of small businesses fail in the first 2 years. I walked over and said a few words to the visibly nervous CEO who had just made the presentation. Intuitively, I could see through the rhetoric that he was passionate about his product, but was unable to position it, trying to anticipate potential questioning. Even more problematic however, was that he was unable to articulate:
I was able to share with him a few of my own entrepreneurial experiences to put his own business into perspective. I was then able to get him to be more in touch with his authenticity and gave him some ideas to bring that out. His resulting optimism started me down a path that I truly have a passion and commitment for today – disseminating proven and practical steps to success, while mentoring others to excel.
The question is: What did I say to him? How did I do it? It's not uncommon for me now to go out into my community, get involved with small business entrepreneurs, and get them to re-focus on a strategic blueprint that will have their business serve them, not the other way around – while delivering quality services and products that enhances the community.
